i should really post more often….

Monday, November 24th, 2008

well, the awesome stuff i see and save keeps piling up, i should post them wen i first find them! hahaha, but on with the show!

first up, an awesome street art project by adam neate. he made 1000 screenprints, varying colours of the same design, and left them round london for people to have for free.. he used to do this before he was well known.

i really really like this idea, kind of gives somethign back to a community that has enjoyed your work (or hated it) for so long.

check out more about him and this project on we made this – www.wemadethis.typead.com

fecal face dot com (yes, weird name i know) recently interviewed uk artist ian francis, who has been doing some rad mixed media work that i am really digging. his abstracted figures and really creepy use of wot i like to call scratchy lines really has inspired me.

see the whole interview on the fecal face website – www.fecalface.com

or check ian’s personal page at – www.ifrancis.co.uk

i love tattoos. i wish i could afford more right now, but they will come as life goes on, so no stress.. but in the meantime, wen i cant have the tattoos of my own, i like to check out wot other poeple are rocking on the bmezine’s modblog. i doesnt just cover tattoos, but piercings and scarification, suspensions and more extreme body mods that involve blurry pictures and links with warnings.

for more awesome, updated nearly everyday, go visit the modblog at – www.modblog.bmezine.com

james joyce is an illustrator out of london (its weird, so many rad uk artists appeal to me!) who has some beautifully simple illustrations and giclee prints on his website. i love the style and thought put into each work in his portfolio. its rad.

definately take a look at his portfolio – www.one-fine-day.co.uk

the super cool kill pixie has recently moved his digs over to lala land (you know, LA) and anthem magazine interviewed him about the move.

read the interview and see some in studio pics at – www.anthemmagazine.com

holy crap, i found this video by eric lerner mere hours after this actually happened to me (in a way). so take the time to watch, the ending is amazing and it got me all teary eyed. an amazing concept accompanied by gong, by sigor ros.

find more from his portfolio on his website – www.ericlerner.com

flying things, by a nice idea everyday, has some pretty amazing photos, which involve, believe it or not, flying things. they are really nicely shot and really make me wanna throw my stereo in the air!

see the whole project on their site – www.aniceideaeveryday.com

i have been seeing stephanie metz’s felt work everywhere lately, and i am totally in love with these lil furry teddybear… things. i dont know how to describe them, but they are like dead baby teddybears stuffedin jars and wot not.

i think they are amazing, and look life like.

catch more amazing work on her new site – www.stephaniemetz.com

oh my freaking god – a 3d website! yes. now, if you dont have 3d glasses, sucked in. but this site totally blew my mind. i dont even know wot these guys do (i assume something with graphics or just being awesome).

grab your r&b’s (yes, r’n'b stole it from red and blues…..) and check it - www.barcinski-jeanjean.com

over on quillskill there is an amazing print by denis brown called inkfall. he used a clear tank with water and ink to create what he called “reductionist calligraphy” and i really really like it!

there is even a video of how it looked at various staged while the ink was dropped on the website! check out the whole rundown at quill skill – www.quillskill.com

freaking genius yoskday yamamoto has created wot is now my favourite figure. called koibito, it ust blows me away!

half person, half fish, and due for release really soon, it just amazes me. one of my fave parts of this is how it directly translates the name from japanese to english:

koibito – loved one / sweetheart

koi – fish

bito – a person / individual

put them all together and you have the person with a koi head. i really want one.

see more by yoskay on his website – www.yoskay.com (which has exceded it bandwidth at time of posting, seems i am not the only person wanting one!!)

finally on the figure front, tokyo plastic, who i love to bits, are soon to release a colab with MPHlabs called koguma! i want this one too…

dont they look delicious!!! and they drop at 11am today usa time.

well, i thought i would kick this post off with a tiny extract from the new actionhorse snowboard movie – pony tale.

actionhorse are rad enough to give this film away for free, so get it from their site – www.actionhorsefilms.com

i have been wanting an inverted diamond ring for a while, i dont know wot it is about them, but just having the stone set in opposition to tradition has really appealled to me. i have always envisaged a thick black band with a break holding the stone, but i just found this beautiful piece by alex and chloe.

the ring, in oxidised silver, is something i am definately interested in. they have a sale on at the moment, but i still cant afford it.

see more by them on their website/store at www.alexandchloe.com

uk based designers skribbla have come up with a new press pack to accompany the release of the honda civic in the uk. it uses a variety of print methods i have become a fan of, spot uv, embossing and reduced opacity stocks.

its really quite impressive, and i definately hope honda is happy with it!

catch the rest of the photos and more work by skribbla on their site – www.skribbla.com

kind of on the same theme, cars, design, 3d design of cars.. you know.. hahaha.. i am in love with this. its a new (as in – still in development) drawing program called i love sketch, and seok-hyung bae, a post-doctoral fellow at the university of toronto’s computer science department. it uses gestural movements on a tablet/tablet pc to record lines in a 3d environment.. i suck at explaining it but my mind just got blown. so watch this worthwile video of it in action.

i definately think this is a step in the right direction as far as graphic programs go. lets hope this makes it to the shop shelves sooner rather then later (or even as a free download for students from the university page)

more info and the paper to go with it at – www.dgp.toronto.edu~shbae/

onto a couple of awesome tableware ideas i really really really like.

firstly, its the rainman decanter, from matilda sunden ringner. it reminds me of a wateringcan, and wen i am getting on the grape, i like it to come as fast as possible. good aeration from the poor would also get the scent going round the room.

looks fantastic.no idea if this is in production or for sale, but creative ideas like this can really bring an exciting twist to old an often boring everyday items!

check out more pictures and work by matilda here – www.matildasundenringner.se

and another great idea for drinking – the table tap, but arnout visser.

this would look a lot more impressive filled with a deep red, but hey, water is cool too. again by putting a new twist, it looks like great fun.. i mite try to make myself one of these at some stage for sangria – spray it straight into my mouth…

see this and more excellent tableware/projects at – www.arnoutvisser.com

shepard fairey has been honoured with a retrospective at the institute of contemporary art in boston. for a retrospective at a fairly young age, and for being a street artist, i think this is truly amazing! i think it was his obama posters that really tipped the scales on this one.

would he still have a retrospective if obama wasn’t president elect?? who knows.

see the press release on the ica website – www.icaboston.org

and more shepard fairey goodness on – www.obeygiant.com

finally, a word from the grad show opening last nite – it was amazing. such a high calibre of work, so much to see, plenty of drinks and way too many people! i have a lot of photos to sort through, a gallery to finish building and a bunch of other stuff to do, but i will start posting images of what i like tomorrow. but lets just say you shuold all get along and see it. it’s open for the next 2 weeks or so 11-5 mon-fri, and 10-2 on a saturday (i think) at sydney college of the arts, rozelle.

to wet your appetite for more, here are a couple of quick, uncategorized works that took my fancy:

more to come as soon as they are all sorted, resized and gallery is finished!

sneak peak at the grad show.

my best mate, yewot has just finished his honours year of his bachelor of visual arts. and his graduation show opens tomorrow nite. luckily we had a snoop on the inside who snuck out some photos before the show opens…

this is the only shot i want to show till it opens, but it gives you an idea of the effort put in!

for more photos by our snoop, katrucia, visit her project page at www.katrucia.carbonmade.com

more photos of the show will be up later this week (when i have finished putting the gallery together)

sharing this post, is an amazing patterend tiger by yehrin tong. it was used for a fabric print, and i really dig it.

go to the interwebs to see it large, and more amazing illustrative works – www.yehrin.proteinos.com

ahhh, 4 months of holiday, nothing much to do.

first up, i wanna share with  you the killers performance from the mtv europe vma’s. its an amazing use of technology for a stage setup, hopefully we will see more like this (perhaps following from daft punk’s legendary pyramid) in the future.

now, on the stationary front, japanese stationers kokuyo have made the raddest highlighters i have ever seen! called the beetle tip, they allow for multiple markings from the one marker!!! rad!!!

i think every student should have one of these.. i know i will be tracking them down wen i am in japan!

for more info (in japanese) check the website – www.kokuyo-st.co.jp

more from the amazing world of japan is the new takara tomy camera, thingy… could this be the death of the polaroid? i think so (or at least, the more modern polaroid). again, its all in japanese, but its called xiao, and i think i read it was a 5mp digital camera with a built in printer!!! i also read that it uses Zink technology, which means reactive paper and no ink cartidges.

i have no idea on price or availability, but if anyone speaks japanese, let me know! check out more info (again, japanese only) on their website – www.takaratomy.co.jp

li xiaofeng makes clothes out of what appears to be ming style ceramic work. it looks amazing, but wouldnt be too practical, unless you were going to war again people who use spoons, or something, biscuits.. yeah.

check out more of her portfolio on – www.hongart.net

i recently came across alejandro chavetta’s portfolio, on the behance network and was pretty impressed by his collage work. now, i am unsure if they are digital or analogue (is that the right term here???) colalges, but they are rad none the less..

check out more from his behance portfolio at – www.behance.net/AlejandroChavetta

finally for today, i have fallen in love with patrick leger’s old school illustrations. they cover a wide array of subject matter, but the style and skill involved completely blows my mind. definately an artist to keep an eye on over the near future.

be amazed by more at – www.patrick-leger.com

a bit of everything…

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

well, not really… its mostly illustration today, but i did find some really nice, different photography to share with you all too.. so i will start with that.

noah kalina loves to use points of light in his work. hailing from brooklyn, noah’s work is raw and gritty much like his surrounds.

check more of his work on his website, at – www.noahkalina.com

next we move onto a talented illustrator called charlie owens. i first came across his work on some skate decks for sale in an exhibition recently (i saw them online, but they were in the exhibition none the less) and i was really drawn to his work. now he has a show on at rivet designer toyshop and gallery, in columbus, ohio.

see more of his work (including the decks i first came across) at – www.charlieowens.com

zoe lacchei is an amazingly talented artist from who knows where.. found her through her dark geisha series, and then found more and more amazing works. i am now a fully fledged fan, and will continue to follow her work.

go to her new site, and check out her work… its amazing. – www.zoelacchei.com

or watch her on deviant art!

last artist for today, then its bed for me. guy mckinley. i meant to post about him a while ago.. may have even done it. i cant remember. but here he is again for the first time! i checked. this time he has a sale in his store! still out of my price range with the exchange rates the way they are, but rad and inspirational none the less.. i love the soft colours he uses…

check out his store on big cartel for more of the series – www.guymckinley.bigcartel.com

and finally… a new restaurant in shibuya that i will definately be visiting!!! it’s a macca’s thing, but it only sells quarter pounders!! thats all thats on the menu!! hahahaha.. will definately be visiting there wen i need some cheap beef!

www.quarter-pounder.net to see their location, and full menu!
