suck my sticky poster.

Monday, May 25th, 2009

ok, worst title ever, but i am tired.

now onto some screen printery action. i finally got the first pull of my skeleton, for the series – this poster sucks.

i am very happy with how it turned out. the pics of glow are about 10 seconds. you can see it easily in the dark after it charges during the day, but who knew photographing glow ink would be so hard!!!

Ryohei Hase

I have been sitting on this one for a while, did a brief feature on him (click here), and now i finally get a chance to share it with you all.

I first came across Ryohei in a copy of Empty magazine (issue 14) sometime last year, when detail from his work “Go Forward and Forward” (above) graced the cover of the magazine. There was no text, just a close up of the image, and the magazine title in start white letters. This was when i fell in love with Ryhohei Hase.

So, i did a little digging. The works shown in side the magazine were amazing. It was hard to believe the level of detail and the amazingly surreal depictions that Ryohei had chosen to work with. People as animals, in their most raw moments, struggling, fighting, sad. This theme of sadness, the gloomy otherworld that comes from the artists own thoughts, projected onto scenes of everyday life in Tokyo city, where the people become the animals.

I don’t want to waffle on, as his image speak louder then my words, so be sure to check him out.

and, if you are interested, here is the pdf presentation i used today, which has some nice closeups of his repetition series, and and comparison between Ryohei and Zdzisław Beksiński – ryohei hase presentation

tentacles!!

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

well, its seems me and my friends are in love with tentacles at the moment, and why the hell not? they are rad, look awesome in pink, and really do add the wow/creepy factor to a lot of things…

so i decided to finally finish my squid design for some pasties/stencils/toys etc…. and here he is

sqwux

very simple so far, no shading, but i will be stencilling him this week!

see more of my art in the side bar at the right, or at - www.qwux.deviantart.com

australian ioshva is a rad artist, using futuristic tentacles and people that remind me of the old movie metropolis!!!! he also got an ARIA award for best album art in 2008, and has one of the best website interfaces i have seen in a while

ioshva

very strange and sexual. i like it. see more at – www.ioshva.com

geemo is a freakish new toy, and i definately want it.. part magnetic, part flexible tentacle thing, this would make an awesome landscape for shooting photos, or posing toys, or just for making organic shapes!!! perhaps even to stick your kids drawings to the fridge!

geemo

isnt that awesome!!! see more at – www.geemotoy.com

and finally, my favourite musician mark hoppus is in the country! his twitter has kept me up to date with wot he is doing everyday, and i love it… but, he has got a prototype of a new toy he seems to have been developing.. and its a freaking octopus!! and i must have it!

mark_hoppus

it’s illuminating.

baaaahahahhaha – dad jokes.. we all love them deep down, and i just made a doozy! but, i hope you get the gist of this post. i am focussing on works that involve light in one way or another, tho it seems to be mostly

one way. we had a unit on light last year at uni, and for it, my group made an installation using a few flourescent tubes that only lit up wen you touched them with your hands. how did we do this? witchcraft, plain and simple. but here is a small video, fairly shitty, to show you the basic idea.

as you can see, the lamp only illuminates where i am touching it. i thought it was a pretty rad installation, and it got a great mark, and lots of good feedback from the people who got to experience it installed.

but i digress, time to move onto other artists who are working with light in some amazing ways!

first up, roger borg, who makes awesome lamps from neon tubes that use light and colour to make some unusual, and amazing shapes!

see all his lamps and light installations at – www.rogerborg.com

thelermont hupton has made some freaking awesome blown glass floor standing lamps, for want of a better word. the fun designs combine the skills of a glass blower with the playfulness of a clown, creating balloon animals for children, and, well, hand grenades…

check out the full set at – www.thelermonthupton.com

james clar has recently allowed a concept to be realised with his rat race works, a surreal poke at the social idea of the rat race. i see it as daft punk x kaws with some rad neon tubes thrown in for good measure, and a talented photographer to capture it all!

the rest of the set is definately worth checking out at – www.jamesclar.com

and finally, i have always been a fan of text based art. and the work of stefan brüggeman is no exception. his simple, highly quoteable typographic installations are both delightful and disconcerting at the same time. using a combination of vinyl and neon/flourescent tubes, they are definately something you want to take a second to read.

check out the awesomely organised website at – www.stefanbruggemann.com

thats all for now. expect pretty much daily doses of the iFe blog from here on out. i am really working to make it somewhere you all want to come!
